Clinical Skills Event 2024
The collaboration between health care professionals is a key aspect to achieve effective and safe therapy with respect to the individual needs of the patient. It is necessary to support the cooperation already during university years through interprofessional education. In the spirit of interprofessional collaboration and education between doctors and pharmacists, the national competition of students of pharmacy and medicine – Clinical Skills Event (CSE) was founded. This year, the competition took place during the Week of Pharmaceutical Education and Career (TyFaVKa) on March 15, 2024 at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Comenius University in Bratislava and at the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice. For the first time we could be proud to welcome the international team from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Ljubljana.
The project is organized by students from pharmaceutical associations – Slovak Pharmacy Student Association (SPSA) and Association of Pharmacy Students in Kosice (APSK) and students from medical associations – The Bratislava Association of Medics (BSM), The Medical Students of Martin (MKM), The Association of Medics of the Slovak Medical University (SM SZU), The Association of Medical Students of the City of Košice (SMMK) and Slovak Medical Students' Association (SloMSA).
The aim of the project is to highlight the benefits of cooperation between doctors and pharmacists, where doctors bring their medical expertise, while pharmacists have the inside scoop on medications. This year, 22 teams (87 students) and one team from Slovenia consisting of 4 students took part in the competition. The teams, consisting of two pharmacy students and two medical students, were involved in three rounds of competition. In the first round, their role was to answer short questions from clinical pharmacy and medicine within a time limit. In the second and third rounds, participants demonstrate their ability to address therapeutic and diagnostic problems based on selected real-life cases, and to comprehensively evaluate the patient's condition and therapy. They used their previous knowledge and skills from clinically oriented disciplines such as pharmacology, internal medicine, clinical pharmacy, anatomy, pathophysiology, clinical biochemistry etc. In case reports, they faced problems such as drug interactions and duplication, pharmacotherapy of risk groups of patients and an overall assessment of the patient's health. Case reports were created by assistent prof. Peter Takáč and assistent prof. Monika Holécyová (The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice), assistent prof. Zuzana Kiliánová, and assistent prof. Gabriel Dóka (The Faculty of Pharmacy, Comenius University Bratislava), prof. Jana Plevková (The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University), doctor and assistent prof. Ivana Jochmanová (Faculty of Pharmacy, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice), doctor Zuzana Javorová Rihová (The Faculty of Medicine, Slovak Medical University Bratislava) and associate prof. Andrea Gažová (The Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University Bratislava).
Each year, CSE hosts professional lectures, which are of an immense interest of our students. The first lecturer was PharmDr. Dalibor Černý, PhD., who works at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy Regional Hospitals Liberec a.s., Department of Clinical Pharmacy Hospitals Rudolf and Stefanie a.s. Benešov, on the topic: "Outpatient clinical pharmacy in the Czech Republic – experience from practice". The presentation was
followed by doc. et doc. MUDr. Eliška Kubíková, PhD., Deputy Head of the Institute of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava with the topic: "Cooperation in the clinic – doctor and pharmacist". The third lecture was given by a guest from the Department of Biopharmacy and Pharmacokinetics, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana, Izr. prof. dr. Lovro Žiberna, mag.farm on "Minds in Overdrive: A Pharmacological Review of Nootropic Agents," focused on biochemical mechanisms, therapeutic applications and the impact of so-called "academic doping" among students interested in cognitive enhancement.
