Department of Pharmacognosy and Botany
The primary Department of Pharmacognosy was established in 1950. Since 1970 when the Department of Botany was incorporated in its structure, the official name is Department of Pharmacognosy and Botany, with two sections: Pharmacognosy Section, and Botany and Pharmacoergasy Section, respectively.
Courses currently provided by the Department are: Pharmaceutical Botany, Medicinal Plants, Pharmacognosy, Natural Remedies, and Technology of Natural Remedies in Master Study Programme ‘Pharmacy’ and Basics of Botany and Pharmacognosy in Bachelor Study Programme ‘Medical and Diagnostical Devices’.
Research activities are covered by different types of grant projects. The main areas of scientific activities of Pharmacognosy Section are focused on bioguided isolation of secondary plant metabolites, study of their biological activities (cytotoxic, antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory), small molecules interactions with proteins related to amyloidoses, and synergy study in previously named scientific areas. Botany and Pharmacoergasy Section studies the exogenic factors’ influence on medicinal plants production, active constituents – pesticides relationships.
