Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology
The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology belongs to the key departments with teaching activities in every year of pharmaceutical studies. Its history can be traced back to the creation of independent pharmaceutical study after the closure of Czech universities in 1939. The head of the Institute of Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy prof. F. Švec, MD organized the study of pharmacy in Slovakia. The Institute was the core of independent teaching of pharmaceutical, medical and pharmacological subjects until the creation of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in 1960. The Department had two subdivisions – Pharmacology and Toxicology and Pharmacological Propedeutics. In 2010, a subdivision of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics was created. The Department was led by F. Inczinger, P. Švec, J. Kyselovič, I. Tumová, J. Klimas and currently is led by P. Křenek.
Alongside with traditional pharmacy subjects (Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Pharmacology), other subjects have been incorporated (Clinical Pharmacology, Veterinary Pharmacology, Therapeutics, Functional Morphology of Tissues, Pathological Physiology). New legislation led to the creation of Bachelor Study Programme. The teachers at the Department teach 6 subjects in Bachelor Study Programme ‘Medical and Diagnostic Devices’, 11 subjects in joint Master Study Programme ‘Pharmacy’ and Pharmacology in PhD Study Programme. They also supervise Bachelor, Master and PhD theses in Slovak and English languages.
Since the beginning the team has studied functional, morphological, biochemical aspects of several pathologies with the possibilities of pharmacological intervention, often with drugs newly synthesized at the Faculty. Models used include cardiac hypertrophy, cardiomyopathies, ischemic heart disease, dysrhythmias, peptic ulcer disease, rheumatoid arthritis, irradiation disease and others. In the 1990s international co-operation led to the incorporation of new methods of molecular biology and papers dealing with pharmacogenomics
were published. In the 1980s research related to clinical pharmacology was begun and projects in the area of pharmaceutical care were initiated in Faculty pharmacies.
Research activities involve the co-operation with domestic and foreign (CZ, NL, B, F, CAN, US) universities and academies of science. Several staff members work as experts in international and domestic institutions (European Medicines Agency in London, State Institute for Drug Control and Ministry of Health in Bratislava). Several members of the Department were active as deans of the Faculty of Pharmacy (Švec, Seginko, Kyselovič) and others as vice-deans (Bózner, Švec, Seginko, Tumová, Klimas) or have received honours and prizes.
